Waitangi Day Commemorations in Hawke's Bay
Waitangi Day is a significant day in New Zealand history, marking the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, first signed on February 6, 1840.
Here are some events you can join to commemorate the day.
Ātea a Rangi, Waitangi Park, Awatoto | 7:45am - 12:00pm
The Waipureku Waitangi Trust invites the people of Hawke’s Bay to the commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 by three Ngati Kahungunu chiefs at Waipureku (Clive).
Waipureku, meaning ’the meeting of waters’, was a lagoon that joined the Ngaruroro and Tukituki rivers.
The commemoration begins at 7.45am at Ātea a Rangi (Waitangi Park, Awatoto) with karakia to start a Hikoi (walk of unity) along the Ngaruroro riverbank to Farndon Park and welcomed with a Haka Pōwhiri at 8.30am by local Manawhenua.
Following the pōwhiri, there will be a public address by local politicians, a re-enactment of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, talks by local historian Pat Parsons and a free Te Tiriti workshop.
Nau mai, haere mai, all welcome!
