Eastern Trails - New Paintings by Graham Stichbury

16 Byron Street, Napier

People often ask for the location of the subject of the painting that they are viewing. This is understandable because many of established local artist Graham Stichbury’s paintings are not necessarily of well-known features.

However, many of the subjects have a special meaning to him. Having been brought up in Gisborne and then living in Napier he has been able to explore many of the inland and coastal areas and has painted some of the places he has visited.

Graham enjoys exploring the web of rural roads that wander from the coast to the ranges. Most of the paintings in this exhibition have been from these ‘Eastern Trails’.

He prefers scenes that are a little atmospheric with threatening skies and often with low sunlight slanting across the subject. When painting Graham likes to accentuate the shapes and contours, so that the darkened valleys and contorted ridges appear more defined than in reality. In fact when people ask me about his style he responds using the term ‘accentuated realism’.

Join Graham to celebrate the opening of his exhibition on Friday 9 November, 5-7pm, all welcome!
