This 1500-acre body of water is owned and managed by Whakakī Lake Trust, who are dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the wetland environment.  Whakakī Lagoon is the largest and easternmost of a string of lagoons which run close to the northern cost of Hawke Bay.

The earliest permanent occupants of Heretaunga were Ngāti Whatumamoa and Ngāti Awa to the north of the Ngaruroro River and Te Aitanga a Whatonga to the south.

The Ngaruroro runs for 164km from its source, emptying into Hawke Bay near Clive - sharing a river mouth with the Tutaekuri River and Te Awa o Mokotūāraro (Clive River) to form the Waitangi Estuary.

All of these walks originate from the Waipātiki beach area, aobut 40min drive north of Napier Waipātiki Scenic Reserve This walk is situated just before Waipātiki Beach 32 kms north of Napier.
