Feel the power beneath your feet – experience Shockwave: Hawke’s Bay’s Great Quake 1931 at MTG Hawke’s Bay.
Tuesday 3 February 1931 was a calm sunny morning, the summer holiday had just ended and children were back to school for their first day of the year, when at 10:47am the earth shook and Te Matau-a-Māui/Hawke’s Bay was rocked by a 7.8 earthquake. Felt across the region, in Ahuriri it felt like a terrific upwards thrust, in Heretaunga a corkscrew twist. For 2 and a half minutes chaos erupted, people were thrown off their feet; buildings shuddered and collapsed as the ground pitched violently.
Visit MTG Hawke’s Bay to hear personal stories of survival and loss, find out who Rūaumoko is and step inside our new shake house to see what an earthquake feels like, without the risk.
Learn about the natural hazards we live with in Hawke’s Bay and how we can build a safer future.
