In the beginning of time, Rangi-nui and Papatūānuku were joined together in love. Their embrace so close that no light shone, with their children caught in-between in darkness. One of their children, Tāne-mahuta, planting his roots firmly in mother earth pushed upwards for light - separating them.
Tāwhiri-mātea, not wanting his parents to be separated, tore his eyes out in anger and threw them up to Rangi-nui as a sign of his love and pain. There they exploded into stars becoming the ‘Eyes of the God Tāwhiri-mātea’, or, ‘Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhiri-matea’, now Matariki.
