“Alzheimer’s and dementia didn’t just take one life. It changed all of ours.”

Warewaretia is a powerful theatrical portrait of a whānau navigating Alzheimer’s and dementia, performed by award-winning Māori theatre maker Kristyl Neho, who brings 24 different characters to life in a deeply moving and often humorous exploration of memory, identity and whānau.
Inspired by Kristyl’s own experience supporting her Nan through Alzheimer’s and dementia, the work explores what it means to slowly lose someone you love while they are still physically here, and the emotional impact carried by the entire whānau around them.

Originally developed during Kristyl’s training at Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School and later with The Conch Theatre, Warewaretia has evolved over nearly two decades into its most powerful version.

Audiences have described the work as deeply moving, funny, heartbreaking and important storytelling that helps people better understand the lived experience of families navigating dementia.

Warewaretia is supported by Dementia New Zealand and Alzheimer’s New Zealand and presented by Wahanui Productions.
