This long, narrow estuary with its wide range of fresh to salty, shallow to deep, and sandy to muddy habitats supports an extremely diverse range of birds, fish, invertebrates and plant life.

The Pan Pac Mountain Bike Park, just 10 minutes drive north of Napier, is the 'home' of the Hawke’s Bay Mountain Bike club.

There are a number of designated Council sites where overnight camping by Certified Self-Contained vehicles are permitted.

Lake Tūtira, and it's neighbouring Lake Waikopiro, is home to an abundance of wildlife and is a popular fishing spot. Alongside the lake is the 463 ha Tūtira Regional Park, maintained by the Hawke's Bay Regional Council, which has an erosion control, sustainable land management programme in place.

When the Ngāti Kahungunu party of Taraia reached the district, now known as Napier, the Whatumamoa, Rangitane and the Ngāti Awa and elements of the Ngāti Tara existed in the areas of Petane, Te Whanganui ā Orotū and Waiohiki.

Yeoman's Track is closed due to damage sustained during Cyclone Gabrielle, with no current date for re-opening. See DOC website for details A walking track along an old logging route at the base of the Ruahine Forest Park is open for mountain bikers as well.

First-time cavers can explore Mangaone Caves - enjoy karst-type features, stalactites, stalagmites and calcite wall coverings.

Built from solid Kauri, the Wairoa Lighthouse was in use from 1878 to 1960.

Napier has numerous walkways linking neighbourhoods, tracing waterways and coastline and threading through reserves and parks.

Please note Te Ana Falls is currently CLOSED - see Department of Conservation website for more information Tangoio Falls and Te Ana Falls are both accessed from the Tangoio Falls carpark just off State Highway 2 about 25mk north of Napier.

The Tukituki River flows for 117 kilometres, east and then northeast, passing through the town of Waipukurau before flowing into Hawke Bay close to the city of Hastings.

Gifted in perpetuity to the community in 1927, Te Mata Park is a cultural, historical and recreational treasure.  The wider park is home to an array of walking and mountain biking trails, with most trails also dog-friendly.

All of these walks originate from the Waipātiki beach area, aobut 40min drive north of Napier Waipātiki Scenic Reserve This walk is situated just before Waipātiki Beach 32 kms north of Napier.

The well-recited legend of Te Mata Peak portrays the hill as the prostrate body of the Waimārama chief, Te Mata.

Bell Rock is an iconic lookout accessed reached via a medium intensity walk.

Extending out along Marine Parade's waterfront, the brand new viewing platform adds architectural interest as well as a fantastic place to pause and watch the world go by.  The viewing platform connects to the foreshore walkway system and provides elevated access to the water’s edge and views of Hawke Bay and back to the city.

The approximately 3km stretch of iconic seafront connects Napier with the Pacific Ocean, with stunning vistas encompassing Māhia Peninsula in the north to Cape Kidnappers in the south.

Hastings was named in 1873 by pastoral runholder and entrepreneur, Thomas Tanner, who had already settled in Central Hawke’s Bay a few years earlier.

Stories of Māui and his many daring feats can be heard throughout Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the great Pacific Ocean.

Near Pōrangahau in Central Hawke's Bay is an unassuming hill known as "Taumata whakatangi hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku pokai whenua kitanatahu" - the longest place name in the world.

To locals it’s just ‘Pukeora’.

This 240 ha of wetland is where Muddy Creek, and the Ngaruroro, Tutaekuri and Te Awa o Mokotūāraro (Clive) Rivers meet the sea.

Arriving in Hastings, the skyline to the west is dominated by the Kaweka Ranges with places of great beauty and historical interest.

The twin Kaweka lakes - Lake Rototuna and Lake Rotoroa - are ecologically and botanically significant because of the large number of plant species and vegetation types in the surrounding area.

Connecting the enormous fountain and iconic Soundshell, the lawn is lined with colourful flowerbeds and is well used by locals and visitors alike.

On this calm Tuesday morning in Hawke's Bay, the region was rocked by a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that violently shook for three minutes.

This is a long trail (200km) that traverses a wide variety of scenery from the flat pastoral and viticulture land of the Heretaunga Plains to the mountainous high country foothills of the Ruahine and Wakarara ranges.

Several walking tracks wind through lush plantings up to the top end of the gardens - which are adjacent to the old Napier Cemetery and provide a solemn but fascinating insight into the history of those who once inhabited the township.

The Ngaruroro runs for 164km from its source, emptying into Hawke Bay near Clive - sharing a river mouth with the Tutaekuri River and Te Awa o Mokotūāraro (Clive River) to form the Waitangi Estuary.

Located just alongside the Village Pools, the Village Green is the undisputed king of playgrounds in Havelock North.

Content provided by the Ongaonga Historical Society The history of Ongaonga village starts in 1865 when Henry Hamilton Bridge arrived from England and purchased Fairfield farm.

Visitors to the scenic reserve can enjoy the hot and cold pools of Mōrere Hot Springs, and the great wilderness on the network of walking tracks ranging from easy 10-minute native bushwalks to challenging two and three hour hikes.

Shine Falls is currently closed - see Department of Conservation website for more information Shine Falls is roughly a 1.5 hours drive away from Napier, and the last 12km is gravel road - but it's worth the trip!The Shine Falls track is a 1.5 hour return walk, and leads to the base of the waterfall.

The hills and the plateau to the southeast of Hastings are places of great beauty and historical interest.

Please note Tangoio Falls is currently CLOSED - see Department of Conservation website for more information Tangoio Falls is absolutely gorgeous, and is particularly spectacular after rain.

Pākōwhai Regional Park is a country-style park, and there are 2km of easy-walking paths and a series of bridges crossing over the Raupare Stream.

The walkway project is led by the Whangawehi Catchment Management Group, a community initiative including Marae, landowners and agencies whose focus is to protect the Whangawehi stream.

This exhibition shows a history of people and places of Ngāti Kahungunu, telling stories of their time and the events that shaped Te Matau-a-Māui into the region of Hawke’s Bay, events that also helped to shape Aotearoa into New Zealand.
