Dark Waters is a series of 18 reproduced lithographs and etchings by Aotearoa / New Zealand master printmaker Anthony Davies, created in response to the devastating impact of Cyclone Gabrielle on 14 February 2023. The disaster deeply affected Te Matau-a-Māui / Hawke’s Bay, with flood waters destroying homes, livelihoods, and community infrastructure. Eleven people lost their lives, and one visitor to the region remains unaccounted for.

This exhibition reflects Davies’ exploration of loss, trauma, and the emotional toll of the cyclone, while also acknowledging the resilience and unity shown by the community.

Drawing on media images that captured his attention, Davies transforms these scenes into works that closely observe human experience, inviting viewers into an intimate act of reflection.

Join Anthony for a public floor talk with Q&A session on Saturday 24 January at 11am.

Entry is free.
