The Easter Experience

28 Browning St, Napier

Yes, Easter is a lovely holiday - especially if the Autumn weather is fine. But it's more than the Easter Bunny, spicy buns and chocolate overload! Experience the real meaning of the ancient traditions of this season when you come along to one - or all - of these events in our beautiful cathedral.
On Maundy Thursday - the 17th of April, we gather to remember the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, and strip the decorations from the cathedral to prepare for the drama of Good Friday.
On the 18th (Good Friday) we enjoy Hot Cross buns - and at one of our two events you can find out why those buns are embellished with a cross. We have a family-friendly service at 10 a.m. Then at midday the cathedral choir presents a moving and lovely work based on the last words of Jesus on the cross, with additional hymns and reflections. People are welcome to come and go as they wish during this three hour event.
On Saturday night at 6 p.m. we light a fire to warm the long hours of darkness while Jesus is in the tomb, with meditations and prayers to guide our thoughts.
And then, on Easter Day - Sunday April 20th - we celebrate the risen Christ with two special Communion services - at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. This second service features wonderful music by the choir and our strings orchestra. And, of course, this is when you can indulge in a traditional roast lamb meal, special cakes and lots of chocolate!
Everyone is welcome to attend any or all of these events - we would love to help you experience Easter our way!
