Kaweka Lakes

Kuripapango, Hastings District, Hawkes Bay

The twin Kaweka Lakes were formed thousands of years ago by streams being dammed by a large slip from Mt Kuripapango.

The small lakes are ecologically and botanically significant because of the large number of plant species and vegetation types in the surrounding area.

The bush fringed lakes are an attractive place for picnics, fishing and walks. Depending on the water level there is usually a sandy beach.

Visitors are asked to take care not to damage the vegetations around the lake. More information on tramps and tracks in the area is available from Department of Conservation.

Getting there

Drive west on Napier-Taihape Road for approx 1 hour, turn right into unsealed Kuripapango Road (just after Blowhard Bush) and follow 10 mins to DOC signposted car park. The track to the lakes heads left from the carpark (no toilet facilites).
