However, if you’re short on time or looking for an experience that is a little bit different, these eight unique cellar doors are sure to intrigue.

Located in the historic National Tobacco Company Building in Ahuriri, Napier, The Urban Winery is the home of Tony Bish Wines, New Zealand’s only specialist Chardonnay wine maker. Tony is also unique in that his wines are processed in concrete and French Oak eggs. He was the first to bring these eggs to New Zealand and has mastered their craft. The Urban Winery offers daily wine tastings and glimpses into the process through the beautiful barrel room with viewing window.

Church Road Winery lets visitors go behind the scenes with the winemaking team on the Versatility of the Grape Experience. This tour showcases the multiple ways that Church Road uses grapes for more than just the production of wine. From pressed juice to balsamic vinegar and barrel aged spirit, this is an informative, behind-the-scenes look at the world of wine and the adaptability of this versatile fruit. The experience concludes with a guided blind tasting of their award-winning range of wines from black glasses.

Smith & Sheth Heretaunga Wine Studio is an immersive experience where all of your senses are engaged. In a private, sensory journey by a sommelier, you will sample limited-production wines,  draw exclusive samples direct from the barrel, and immerse yourself in an audio-visual journey from the safety of the intimate studio theatre.

De la Terre is the home of one of New Zealand’s most-awarded wine makers. Tony Pritchard’s unique earth brick winery is rustic and earthy, and visiting De la Terre is a true grass roots experience. Here you will taste exquisite wines from a legendary wine maker in his home environment.

Under the watchful eye of Te Mata Peak, the Craggy Range cellar door is a breath-taking setting in which to taste a selection of Craggy Range wines. However wine tasting becomes truly awe-inspiring  when you visit the incredible underground cellars and Sophia Barrel Room with the Ultimate Prestige Tasting experience. Here you will tour the underground barrel hall, and fermentation cellars before experiencing Craggy Range’s Prestige Collection wines and discussing the history of Craggy Range and their winemaking philosophy.

Villa Maria Gimblett Gravels is the recently revamped offering from goliath Villa Maria, where oenophiles, under Richard Painter’s guided tuition, can indulge in a memorable experience tasting their way through Villa Maria and Esk Valley wines paired with culinary expressions of the wine, designed by renowned Chef Stephen Tindall.

Classic Kiwi hospitality with a side of sport is on offer when you visit Junction Vineyard, owned by former All Black forward John Ashworth and family. Get up close and personal with the producers

Getting amongst Hawke’s Bay Food and Wine Country is a must do, and there’s no better way than getting up close and personal with some of the region’s greatest producers.

From a hill country farmstead and eco lodge to hunts for one of the world’s greatest delicacies, Hawke’s Bay offers foodies truly unique experiences that showcase just some of the region’s extensive culinary credentials.

In Central Hawke’s Bay, Mangarara Eco Lodge is an ideal location for a weekend immersed in Food and Wine Country. Embrace the rhythms of rural Hawke’s Bay, muck in collecting free range eggs from the mobile hen house, devour fresh produce straight from the garden and discover the regenerative farming practises that also lead to the nutritious and utterly delicious Mangarara Family Farm Beef.

Te Mata Figs in Havelock North is New Zealand’s largest figgery and tours of this very special orchard are absolutely enlightening. Fig flowers – yes they’re flowers – are then turned into an extensive range of delicious and nutrient dense offerings at their onsite café. Fig leaf tea anyone?

Young and old alike will love Arataki Honey. Learn more than you ever thought possible about bees and how they operate; discover the nuances of honey and how the delicate flavours change as a result of the pollen collected by bees; and use all of your sense as you get a taste for life as a beekeeper.

At Sacre Monte Truffles you will be joined by Teddy, the company’s truffle dog to hunt for black gold - Perigord Black Truffles, and Winter Black Truffle. Book the tour directly with Sacre Monte or double down on the experience by booking a truffle lunch or weekend with The Manse and let owner and chef Gary Grootelaar wow you with one of the most amazing meals you’ll ever eat.

Another earthy experience can be found at Te Mata Mushrooms where factory tours can be booked on request. The second largest mushroom grower in New Zealand, Te Mata Mushrooms are the only producers of their specialty Vitamin D Mushroom that has been exposed to UV to increase its vitamin D ('sunshine vitamin') content.

Garden to plate cuisine at its finest

Not content to simply use the freshest produce Hawke’s Bay has to offer, many of the region’s finest chefs and creators passionately grow their own produce ensuring garden-to-plate cuisine that is among the finest in the country.

For Casey McDonald, Head Chef at Craggy Range, his move to Hawke’s Bay was always going to be about the produce.

“the great thing about working in Hawke’s Bay and at Craggy Range is that Hawke’s Bay has the best produce, almost anywhere in the world sometimes. You have to go out and get it, but that part of the job is really enjoyable. Our suppliers decide the menu.”

And for a menu that is full of big bold flavours, delivered with subtlety and a lot of finesse, that’s a lot of pressure to put on the ingredients. Perhaps this is why Casey McDonald tends so carefully to the gardens at Craggy Range.

With an ever-changing menu, many of the herbs, fruits and vegetables are grown in the extensive kitchen garden. This produce is highlighted on the menu and serves as an acute reminder to guests of the very low food miles that have contributed.

Francky Godinho’s St George’s Restaurant in Havelock North has made its name off its sustainable approach and abundance of home-grown ingredients.

St Georges’ menu is always designed around its seasonal produce with Head Chef Francky growing and nurturing more than 90% of the produce in his own on-site organic garden. In fact, his gardens have become so vast that he on sells some of his produce to other restaurants and chefs in the region.

With considerable planting taking place in the lead-up to the busiest months of the year, the team looks forward to once again bringing its customers an abundance of colourful food.

“What we do at St George’s is totally organic. We grow our own produce, we change our menu every four weeks, we are sustainable and natural. We work to keep in line with the environment,” says Francky.

It’s not just the chefs of Hawke’s Bay who are passionate about the origin of their ingredients; award-winning gin makers Hastings Distillers are passionate about growing their own organic ingredients too.

Kate Galloway and David Ramonteu, Hastings Distillers’ founders, source many of the botanicals for their multi award winning range of gins from “gin gardens” dotted across Hawke’s Bay. While local organic citrus growers provide the fruit, the many herbs and aromatics – including angelica, coriander seeds and bay leaves - are lovingly tended by a number of small biodynamic suppliers (including friends and family) around the region.

Kate and David grow a few themselves too, which they then add to their ever-expanding ‘olfactory library.’ What began as the starting point for their much-lauded Albertine gin currently houses over 300 beautiful New Zealand botanicals, many of which end up in their delicious, carefully crafted gins and liqueurs.

Other restaurants with a kitchen garden include:

Cape Kidnappers:
Farm by name and nature, Cape Kidnappers harvests much of its own produce from its onsite vegetable garden. Planted and harvested by the moon, this extensive kitchen garden is close to the lodge and abundant in every season.

Mangapapa Hotel:
The Mangapapa Kitchen is a place of creativity using fresh produce grown in their kitchen garden and acres of orchards. Mangapapa Kitchen maintains a ‘paddock to plate’ philosophy in all their cuisine, straight from the great outdoors to the kitchen preparation hub.

Wallingford Kitchen:
At Wallingford, chef Chris Stockdale’s menu has an emphasis on seasonal produce & foraging. Here you can taste truffles, herbs, fruit, vegetables & delicious angus beef from their garden and farm.

The Manse:
The Manse offers a true paddock to plate experience with most of the fresh produce and ingredients coming straight from the lodge’s small farm and orchard. Chef Gary creates personalised menus for his guested based around the fresh seasonal produce from his garden.

F.G Smith Eatery:
This urban café in the middle of Ahuriri has a fantastic garden that provides the freshest seasonal salad greens and herbs for their kitchen.

Sunday service in Hawke’s Bay

The Hawke’s Bay Farmers' Market is a delicious snapshot of New Zealand’s Food and Wine Country and the perfect starting point for a Sunday in the Bay.

One of the very first farmer’s markets in New Zealand and one of the largest, the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market effortlessly encapsulates the region’s vast and sumptuous offering of tasty bites and divine drinks.

The market shows off the region to perfection. Widely considered a world class offering, it has become an absolute ‘must-do’ for the many foodies who pilgrimage to Hawke’s Bay.

Throughout its 20-year history the Farmers’ Market has hosted an incredible range of producers and growers. Now with 75 regular stall holders, visitors to the market can purchase invigorating coffee straight from the roasters, sample smooth cheeses, and take home the freshest fruit, vegetables and herbs straight from the grower. They can indulge in delicious pastries, buy award-winning wines, and secure the tastiest produce for the week ahead.

Set amongst the leafy surrounds of the Waikoko Showgrounds in Hastings, the market has become a cross-section of traditional farmers’ market fare and unique artisan producers.
Stalwarts of the market include the likes of specialised herb and vegetable growers Epicurean Supplies, produce garden JJ Organics, coffee masters Bay Espresso and local institution Holly Bacon, who all supply the type of quality product that are the mainstay of farmers’ markets the world over.

In Hawke’s Bay however, foodies find these stallholders side by side with market newbies selling everything from mini mushrooms farms (Good Vibes Fungi), hemp seed oil (Kanapu), artisan sausages (Pig and Salt), organic freeze-dried feijoa wedges (Heather’s Feijoa) and boutique aromatic wines from the likes of Petane Wines.

An ode to the region, the Farmers’ Market also has a presence in Napier. The Napier Urban Farmers’ Market, in Clive Square on Saturday mornings, is the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market’s little sister. While concise in its offering, many of the same stallholders attend, making this thriving little market a delightful city-based extension of the larger Sunday morning affair.

In recent years, as sustainability has moved to the forefront of conversation, both the Saturday and Sunday markets, and their stallholders, have committed wholeheartedly to the cause. Roughly 90 per cent of waste from the markets is diverted from landfill, with all takeaway and tasting packaging compostable.

Whatever it is that draws visitors, whether that be the smell of freshly ground coffee beans or the promise of the freshest produce around, the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market has become a religion for many. A place to commune, a place to pilgrimage to, and a place to sit back and enjoy the divine offerings of Hawke’s Bay Food and Wine Country.

Hop to it – 16 craft brewers you need to try

Food and Wine country we may be, but there is no denying Hawke’s Bay is also home to a vast range of incredible craft brewers and distillers.

From newly-opened taprooms and iconic pubs that offer a variety of the region’s finest beers, to the relaxed atmosphere of cideries and even beer gardens where you shelter from the sun under a canopy of hops, Hawke’s Bay craft brewers are worth a day (or two or three) unto themselves.

And while the renaissance of Hawke’s Bay brewers and distillers has been underway for four or five years now, it has never been more accessible.

“If you look back four or five years ago, almost everyone that is on the scene now was here then, but we’ve all grown. We’ve built on our offerings, and people are beginning to search us out,” says Chris Ormond of Giant Brewing who have just opened a brand-new, must-visit taproom in Havelock North.

The growth in the craft beverages industry in Hawke’s Bay is a natural evolution for a region such as this, he says.

“Hawke’s Bay is known nationwide now as an awesome food and beverage province. People outside of here just love the place. They love our food, our top end restaurants and our wine, and craft beverages in general, including cider and gin, and the momentum is great.”

Rachel Downes, co-owner of GodsOwn Brewery, at Maraekakaho couldn’t agree more.

“Wineries and breweries mesh together really well,” she says of their brew pub and hop farm that sits on the edge of the famed Bridge Pa Wine Triangle.

“A few years ago a lot people thought the market was heading for a down turn. They thought it was saturated. But that hasn’t really happened in Hawke’s Bay. For us, it is partly because we approach things a little differently. We don’t bottle and wholesale, we are focused on bringing people here to our place and giving them a truly great experience.”

Bringing people together is something GodsOwn does fantastically. With their beers on tap and delicious wood-fired pizzas served out of caravan bar, the atmosphere is so relaxed it's virtually horizontal as visitors sit beneath a canopy of hops and children enjoy the extensive on-site playground.

Other must-see brewers in Hawke’s Bay include Brave Brewing, which recently opened its new premises in Hastings, craft cider bars Zeffer and Three Wise Birds, gin distillers Hastings Distillers tasting room in East Block 200 and National Distillery housed in the National Tobacco Building in Ahuriri, and Abbey Brewery and Roosters in the Hastings District.

Others can be found at bars or likeminded estates across the region such as Hawke’s Bay Brewing Co - which can be found at The Filter Room, Napier Brewing Company and Zeelandt - both found on tap at the iconic Westshore Beach Inn, Paynters Cider - made at Linden Estate in Eskdale, Iron Pot Beer and Damson Collection fruit liqueurs - which can be picked up at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market, and Deco City beer, gin, vodka and ciders - which can all be found at Ahuriri Cellars.

6 stops for the health conscious

With some of the best growing conditions in New Zealand, it is little wonder that Hawke’s Bay also has some of the leading growers, suppliers and innovators of organic and nutrient-dense kai.

So if it’s decadence without a guilt trip that you’re after then here are six stops for the health conscious.

Leading the way in this field is the iconic Hapī. Specialising in sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, paleo, vegan, raw and allergy-free items, theirs’ is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Gretta Carney and Fleur du Frense are health practitioners who make plant based, nutrient dense food that tastes delicious. The pair believe wholeheartedly in living vital foods as a powerful source of abundant health and healing, and use their café as a place to share their knowledge of health and food with their community.

“It’s about managing your health really well through food because the results of eating well can be profound,” says Gretta. “The idea is to focus on the food as a source of health and nutrition and healing.”

At any time or day of the week, Hapi is busy. Sharing its premises with Chantal Shop, an organic food store, means that the two have become a hub for the heath-conscious and likeminded.

Started in 1983 as a whole food co-op, Chantal Shop is now owned by passionate local family who source and sell only the best organic produce and products. They also sell reusable and sustainable products and have an extensive herbal dispensary with qualified naturopaths on hand to answer all and any questions.

Hastings is home to three fabulous organic foodie businesses – OM Goodness, Organic Farm Butchery and Cornucopia.

OM Goodness, with their range of organic and vegan breads are all gluten, dairy, egg and refined sugar free, is a dream for bread lovers.  Developed more than 10 years ago, OMGoodness Bread is designed to provide high quality nutrition, make great toast and sandwich bread, to have outstanding taste and texture and to be suitable for a child's sensitive palate. Organic Farm Butchery sources grass-fed, free range organic beef, lamb and pork from Hawke’s Bay’s local certified organic farms. Another business that is a decade-strong, they have year-round access to the best organic meat Hawke’s Bay has to offer.

What you can’t find at OM Goodness and Organic Farm Butchery, you will certainly source from Cornucopia Organics - Hastings' one stop shop known for organic, whole and natural food as well as an extensive range of herbal, health and naturopathic products.

Further south in Waipawa, Nature’s Nuture is Central Hawke's Bay local shop for fresh organic fruit and veggies, groceries, bulk food and much, much more.
