Matariki is a time to come together to remember those we’ve lost, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the year to come. We’re marking the occasion with an evening of performance, kai, storytelling and shared moments with whānau and friends.

Originally set for 27 June, our Ahuriri Matariki celebration was postponed due to bad weather – but we’re back on, and it’s all happening Friday 4 July, 5.30pm - 8.30pm at the Napier Soundshell. Perfect timing for the school holidays!

Our stage line-up features some amazing local talent, including:
✨ Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Ara Hou – Tama Tūranga
✨ Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Ara Hou – Wharekura
✨ Te Ūranga Waka – EIT Māori Studies
✨ Justin and Manaia Warena
✨ Reg Butler
✨ Teine mai le Mauga
✨ Plus a few more still to be confirmed

Guiding the evening is our MC, Pereri King, who will be sharing stories that bring the meaning of Matariki to life throughout the night.
Around the Soundshell you’ll find a vibrant mix of stalls and activities tamariki will love, everything from tāonga and handmade goods to Tāmoko, face painting, creativity and kōrero.

When it comes to kai, we’re keeping it local and delicious. Grab something tasty from a great range of food trucks including Rocket Science Turkish Kebabs, Wombos, Boost Espresso, Indulgence Catering, Shani’s Rib Truck, Mr Whippy, Lulus Soft Serve, Karakia Kreationz, Asian Food, Bites 2 Go, and TC Fun 4 Kids. And for something a little extra special, don’t miss Sydney and Rick’s Boil Up and Rewena Bread stall, perfect for warming the puku on a cool evening.

This is a free, whānau-friendly event, and one of the brightest nights on Napier’s winter calendar. So rug up, round up the whānau, and spend the evening with us celebrating Matariki in the heart of Ahuriri.

Nau mai haere mai, all are welcome!
