Ross Pfeffer; Paintings in Oil

16 Byron Street, Napier

Once every four or five years during Ross Pfeffer's working life, he painted during the summer break, just enough to know he loved it. But he was frustrated, and it was clear to Ross that the only way for him to paint really well, was to do it all the time. Since retiring Ross now happily paints full-time. This is his first solo exhibition.

Ross resides in Island Bay Wellington, looking out to Red Rocks, Cook Strait and the South Island; views he has painted many times. Ross and his wife have made regular visits to Napier over the last 10 years which have led to a decision to move here.

The abundance of friendly people, great weather and painting subject matter have worked their magic! The process of making the move has inspired most of Ross's work over the last few months, producing amazing scenes of Napier and the Hawkes Bay.

Until now Ross has gifted many paintings, and a number are on display in restaurants. Napier's highly regarded "Thai Hutt" has 6 on display, including 2 that are portraits of Bodin, the welcoming owner behind the bar. Wellington's "Original Thai" restaurant in Island Bay was the first restaurant to hang his work.

Ross likes to paint both NZ landscapes and people. He paints with oils on canvas exclusively in a realistic style with an impressionist bias. He names Monet and Renoir as the most influential artists on his own style.

While Napier and the Hawkes Bay have been the inspiration for recent landscapes, over the last few years Wellington coastal scenes dominated, reflecting where Ross was living. He has executed a large number if lily pond works, and many of Thai women in traditional dress, plus portraits of family, friends and acquaintances.

Ross is driven by the desire to improve, without knowing what that means ultimately. Self taught, he believes the more he paints the better he will become. Some 20 years ago, during a relatively free work summer he copied a number of Renoir paintings as an enjoyable learning exercise.

Having completed hundreds of works, over the last 3.5 years Ross's house was getting cluttered; the walls alone covered with about 100 works. The rest are in boxes, on shelves, on the floor, and everywhere. Ross felt it was time for review and to move some works along, despite being very attached to them as points of reference.

Ross's ambition is simple; to continue with his passion to paint and see where the journey takes him, and to give it everything.

Join Ross to celebrate the opening of his exhibition on Friday 12 April, 5-7pm. All welcome!
