There are a number of designated Council sites where overnight camping by Certified Self-Contained vehicles are permitted.

The approximately 3km stretch of iconic seafront connects Napier with the Pacific Ocean, with stunning vistas encompassing Māhia Peninsula in the north to Cape Kidnappers in the south.

The road is fully sealed but is quite windy and narrow in places.

An approximate 40minute drive southeast from Waipawa or Waipukurau through the Central Hawke's Bay countryside takes you past historic churches, picturesque woolsheds and stunning country landscapes to finally glimpse the south Pacific Ocean before descending down the hill to Blackhead beach.

Mahanga is a white sandy beach, on the northern edge of Māhia Peninsula.

Connecting the enormous fountain and iconic Soundshell, the lawn is lined with colourful flowerbeds and is well used by locals and visitors alike.

For decades, the breathtaking scenery has made Māhia a favourite holiday spot for many families and individuals.

Set alongside the waterfront in Ahuriri, Spriggs Park playground is a large playground which has much to offer children and families of all ages.

Mangakuri is a smal, close knit settlement which was established from beachfront land that was part of the original Mangakuri Station many years ago.  Mangakuri is a lovely spot if you like a beach without the hustle and bustle.

In April 1967 a start was made on excavating the 30,000 cubic yard hole for the Sunken Gardens.

Broken hill country, deep ravines and geologically unstable terrain dissuaded early travellers from venturing too far inland on the torturous journey between Napier and Wairoa.

A popular spot with locals, beside the busy Napier Port - which has set aside safe swimming in the designated zone inside the orange buoys.

Pourerere Beach has two settlements - one as you enter the beach which is where you access the lagoon, and the second settlement with original baches, boat launch and camping ground is at the far end of the gravel road.

The hills and the plateau to the southeast of Hastings are places of great beauty and historical interest.

The drive down to Ocean Beach via the access road is iconic to Hawke's Bay, providing stunning views to the north and south including Motu-o-Kura (Bare Island).

The beach is a white sandy one, safe for swimming, relaxing, picnics, walking and surfing when conditions are right.

Nestled into the Mahia coastline, where the Maungawhio Lagoon meets the sea, you'll find Oraka Beach.

The Tangoio Beach area is popular, particularly in the summer, for recreation activities, including fishing, diving, walking and swimming.

Just a 40 minute drive north of Napier, you'll discover Stingray Bay, a small, rocky bay located just north of Tangoio Beach.

Taylor's Bay is on the other side of Mokotahi Hill from Māhia Beach, home to a small community of resident and holiday homes.

The walkway project is led by the Whangawehi Catchment Management Group, a community initiative including Marae, landowners and agencies whose focus is to protect the Whangawehi stream.

Summertime in Pōrangahau is a bare foot wander to the golden sand Te Paerahi beach where you can surf cast, fly kites, ride blow carts on a windy day or simply soak up some sunshine and it is home to some incredible fishing and diving spots and summer events.

All of these walks originate from the Waipātiki beach area, aobut 40min drive north of Napier Waipātiki Scenic Reserve This walk is situated just before Waipātiki Beach 32 kms north of Napier.

Waimārama is 20 minutes' drive from Havelock North, offering a long white sand beach that's generally very safe for swimming.

The Wairoa Riverside Walk & Cycleway winds 5km along the banks of the scenic Wairoa River.

Waipātiki Beach is a picturesque settlement with native bush and a broad stretch of golden sand.

Westshore Beach is patrolled during summer months by the Westshore Surf Lifesaving Club.

Locals enjoy coming to Whakamahia to go fishing, particularly for kahawai and snapper.

Whangaehu Beach is very isolated, so you will need to take all of your supplies for your trip.
