Getaway Australia explores Hawke's Bay

Hawke’s Bay Takes Centre Stage on Getaway

Hawke’s Bay has been in the spotlight on Getaway, Australia’s much-loved travel show — with three dedicated features showcasing the very best of our region.

Cape Coast & Wineries: Cycling Through Wine Country

Getaway's David Reyne explored the Cape Coast with Tākaro Trails Cycle Tours, who provide everything from casual bike hire to fully supported guided tours and multi-day itineraries. His journey began at Te Awanga beach with a stop at Clearview Estate, where owner Tim Turvey poured a lively 2022 Reserve Chardonnay, brimming with stone fruit, pineapple, and butterscotch tones.

Following the Tukituki River inland, David stopped at Black Barn Vineyards for a sparkling rosé tasting before heading to the shadow of Te Mata Peak and Craggy Range Winery. Here, in their underground cellar, he sampled a young merlot blend straight from the barrel.

With luxurious cottages at Craggy Range, boutique cellar doors, and trails that meander through stunning landscapes, the Cape Coast is a must for wine lovers and adventurers alike.

Napier Art Deco & Vintage Cars

David Reyne explored the city in style with a vintage car tour from the Art Deco Trust, cruising in a 1940 Packard past pastel façades, stylised columns, and geometric designs. Highlights included the ornate Daily Telegraph building, the Municipal Theatre with its Hollywood-inspired interiors, and the Public Trust Office, one of the few buildings to survive the earthquake.

The tour concluded at the National Tobacco Company Building, now home to the National Distillery Company. Here, David enjoyed a tasting of their award-winning Verdigris Gin — a London Dry with a Hawke’s Bay twist. For the full nostalgic experience, Napier’s Art Deco Masonic Hotel offers heritage charm and even the chance to stay in the suite once occupied by Queen Elizabeth II.

With year-round tours, boutique hotels, and one of the most iconic festivals in New Zealand, Napier is a city where history and style collide.

Cape Kidnappers & Gannet Safaris

Few places in New Zealand capture the imagination quite like Cape Kidnappers. Just an hour’s flight from Auckland to Napier, and a short drive south, you’ll discover a headland steeped in Māori legend and home to the world’s most accessible Australasian gannet colony.

David Reyne joined Gannet Safaris Overland for a dawn tour, watching as thousands of gannets stirred and soared against the morning light. These graceful seabirds — who mate for life from the age of five — thrive across four colonies on Cape Kidnappers’ vast 2,500-hectare farmland. The peninsula is also linked to the legend of Te Matau-a-Māui, the fishhook of Māui, said to have pulled up the North Island from the sea.

The cape is also home to Rosewood Cape Kidnappers, a world-renowned luxury lodge offering exquisite dining, private villas, and one of the world’s top golf courses. Whether for wildlife encounters, Māori stories, or luxury escapes, Cape Kidnappers is an unforgettable Hawke’s Bay experience.
