Nevaria Lavender was established in 2004 on a lifestyle property near Taradale by owners Maria and Neville MacDonald. They have a gift shop on the property from which they sell natural products.
They planted 600 ‘Grosso’ lavender plants from which essential lavender oil is produced. The violet flowers produce a strong scent which yields excellent oil.
The lavender begins to flower in early November through to January, however, harvesting is not carried out until the end of January or early February once the flowers are fully formed (and weather permitting).
The lavender is picked by hand, once the morning dew has dried and the flowers are perfectly dry. It is then distilled here on the same day to produce the oil.
The oil is produced by the cut lavender being placed in a stainless steel still pot which then has steam forced through. The end result of this steam distillation process is the essential lavender oil and hydrosol.
