Itinerary: Art Deco Hastings
Why not spend Thursday of Festival week in Hastings? We have planned a great day out for you! The Hastings City Art Deco Market is the perfect place to kit yourself out for this Festival, with our vendors selling their carefully collected brand new, vintage, and second-hand Art Deco clothing, accessories and more! After wandering the stalls, sit back and enjoy the live entertainment, music, silent movies, dancing, and food trucks!
After securing your Deco wear at the market, enter the Hastings Art Deco Fashion Flaunt. With numerous fun competitions and prizes, it’s the perfect way to spend an hour of your evening! The categories are increasing to include: Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Gent, Best Dressed Child, Best Dressed Couple or Group, LGBT and Toi Deco Maori Fashion. Try your luck and strut your stuff!
There are a fabulous selection of bars and restaurants in Hastings and we have lined up a few of our favourites. Held at the Common Room, Not So Common Deco offers great wine, craft beers and excellent foods. Relax in the garden bar and be surrounded by a positive vibe and live jazz music. Or visit Fun Buns who are also holding a R18 Cocktail High Tea with a selection of delicious treats and drinks. Or pop into Sazio, a pasta bar, and sample their R18 family style Buenos Aires tango-themed dinner. Take your senses on holiday in the land of Argentina without having to leave the Bay!
Take the opportunity to see the fine collection of vintage cars on display in Heretaunga Street East whilst toe tapping music surrounds you. Look to the skies at 7pm for an impressive spectacle as the Warbirds fly over Hastings for the first time ever!

Itinerary: Family Deco
Introducing a family friendly way to explore the highlights of festival for our younger festival go-ers. Start celebrating festival with flair on Friday and wander along for Foreshore and secure a great spot to watch the Memorial Flying Displays that woo and please the crowds. There’s a great line up of swinging entertainment in the Sound Shell at the Friday Night with the stars. Don’t forget the Food court and treat the kids to a hot dog or freshly cooked donuts!
A real Saturday morning highlight for our younger festival goers is the Art Deco Explorer for children, adults are free with accompanying child. Join a local guide who will take you on an art deco adventure through Napier. Discover the entertainment hot spots throughout the city with a jam-packed Celebrations on the Street and be sure that you have saved a great viewing point for the Vintage Car parade by lunchtime. Watch the wide array of vintage cars crawl through the city centre from Clive Square to Marine Parade via Lower Emerson St and upper Emerson St, finishing at the Napier Sound Shell where they are on display for the duration of the festival for a closer look. Perhaps, take a ride in a Vintage Car along Marine Parade and view the city at slower pace and in style. Don’t forget about the Deco Kids Club that will be full of fun Art Deco games, entertainment and activities, open all weekend. Complete your afternoon with some dancing in the Sound Shell at the Deco Spontane. Learn dance routines and express yourself with your version of the Charleston! Return to the Sound Shell later for an evening of entertainment with the Royal New Zealand Navy Band and enjoy an outstanding outdoor musical concert!
The Deco Dog Parade is a fabulous and fun event to introduce our 4 legged friends to the wonderful world of Art Deco. Marvel at the costumes of both the dogs and owners at this awesome family event. Afterwards, wander down towards Market Street Fair to discover the tastes and toys of yester-year, be sure to bring along a little bit of pocket money to purchase some sweet treats. Grab a picnic and head to the foreshore and soak up the atmosphere of the Gatsby Picnic, a firm festival favourite! Another great way for families to spend their time along Napier's Marine Parade is at Par2 Mini Golf! Don your best Art Deco outfit and enjoy a casual afternoon family putt!

Itinerary: First Time Deco
You are about to enter a world of unique and wonderful experiences and we guarantee you’ll be back for more! The Friday night with the Stars is a great starting point to the Festival. Simply wander around and soak up the atmosphere in the Napier City Centre. There’s a great line up of swinging entertainment in the Sound Shell. There's also Memorial Flying Display in the evening over the Napier Foreshore which is a sight not to be missed! If a little bit of speakeasy is more your style, don’t miss the Prohibition Pop Up where you can party with bootleg liquor, music and live entertainment.
On Saturday morning, enjoy Brunch at the County to start your day in true Art Deco style. The Vintage Car Parade at lunchtime is a fabulous and fun event to see and watch the incredible array of vehicles on show. The vintage cars crawl through the city centre from Clive Square to Marine Parade via Lower Emerson St and upper Emerson St, finishing at the Napier Sound Shell where they are on display for the duration of the festival for a closer look.
Perhaps grab some tickets for one of the toe tapping dinner and dance events such as Barrels & Bootleggers Wingding in the Festival Marquee or perhaps take in a comedy show at the MTG. Whichever you choose, you will be carried back to the roaring 20s and enjoy a great night out!
One of the highlights and a popular Festival event is the Soap Box Derby on Sunday morning where children and parents race their home-made carts to the delight of the crowd who come to watch and cheer them on. After the excitement of the Derby, wander across to the foreshore, perhaps with a picnic and enjoy the sounds and sights of the Gatsby Picnic. Or join the Gatsby VIP Picnic Lunch and enjoy a light lunch overlooking the ocean and let your eyes wander to the magnificent view as far as Cape Kidnappers. For a grand finale of Festival, join your fellow Deco-ites for a farewell to Deco at the Deco Best Bits, a fun and relaxing evening showcasing entertainment and performers from throughout the festival. An evening show not to be missed!

Looking for a fun-filled Art Deco Weekend? Look no further, here are the festival highlights just for you! Be our guest! Kick start your 2021 Festival experience off right by attending the Festival Launch Luncheon. You will enjoy soulful jazz and a dancing display, accompanied by a delicious two course meal. After welcoming in the Festival, join a Vintage Car Tour to discover Napier’s Art Deco heritage, visiting the Art Deco Quarter, Port Ahuriri, the Art Deco residential suburb of Marewa, the Municipal Theatre and the National Tobacco Company building. To top the day off, book yourselves in for the Electro Swing Prohibition Party where you will relive the dark underground nightlife of the prohibition era.
Begin Saturday with a hearty buffet breakfast at the Gatsby Jazz Breakfast. Marvel at the beachfront views whilst a jazz band sets your feet tapping! After breakfast, if you’re up for a challenge, gather a small group of friends and arrive at the Napier Prison to test your problem-solving skills in our new 1930s Escape Room. Get locked in where you have one hour to solve the quirky tales. If you would prefer to brush up on your dancing skills instead, head along to our Learn to Charleston dance lessons where you will learn both the solo and partnered Charleston from the 1920s and 1930s. Then, don a flapper dress, zoot suit, or old timey bootlegger garb, join in for a night of underground New York style party celebrations at the Barrels & Bootleggers Wingding.
To get your Sunday off to a flying start, head along to the Blow Your Wig Brunch on the Beach. With live jazz entertainment and beautiful ocean views, this is a cheerful, sociable and exciting event! Don your best Deco wear and partake in the best dressed competition to be in to win! Seeing as you’re all dressed up, strut your stuff on the Festival’s catwalk in the 2021 Fashion on the Foreshore competition! After a morning of fun and hilarity, relax to a movie, either Ninotchka (1939) or Top Hat (1935), at Ahuriri’s Globe Theatrette. Book in and receive a sweet treat to enjoy by Chocolatier Mirams. Then, help us say a final hurrah to the 2021 Art Deco Festival at Deco Best Bits. Enjoy a little bit of everything that the Festival has to offer from a delicious buffet dinner to entertainment from various performers. Have one last drink, dance and laugh to wrap up the 2021 Festival!
