**Frédéric Chopin Preludes and Ballades**
*Bach is an astronomer, discovering the most marvellous stars. Beethoven challenges the universe. I only try to express the soul and the heart of man.* - **Frédéric Chopin**
An artist of extraordinary heart and virtuosity, Piers Lane will perform the complete cycle of Frédéric Chopin’s Preludes and Ballades - the quintessential pairing of artist and programme.
The Preludes are beautifully enigmatic. They are not introductions to anything, but are each perfectly formed musical miniatures that capture a vast array of human emotion and experience. The Ballades, by comparison, express the composer’s Romantic ideals on a larger canvas. Widely considered as being amongst the most significant and difficult solo piano works from the nineteenth century, the four Ballades take the listener on a visceral journey from tender intimacy to serenity, tumult and thunderous heroism.
