Come and celebrate World Wetland Day with our Wai Connection team, local iwi and hapu, ecologists such as Malcom Rutherford, and other stakeholders to learn about the importance of wetlands in our freshwater ecosystems, whakapapa of the area and future restoration plans.

This event will include a hikoi around the wetland, trying to spot the Matuku-hūrepo (Bittern) and learning about their importance for wetland biodiversity and health.

This event is held on private land:
Meet at 44 Parker Lane, Makaraka.

Outline for the evening:
- Arrive at 5.30pm
- Opening karakia and health and safety
- Introductions and whakapapa of the area
- Guided walk, bird watching and information sharing from Malcom Rutherford
- Information shared from other stakeholders and future plans for this site and the wider Waikanae area
- Identifying species that live within these wetland habitats
- Hot drink and biscuits to end the evening
- Closing karakia 7pm

This event is for 10 years and older, all participants under the age of 18yrs need to be accompanied by an adult at all times.

What to bring:
- Appropriate clothing (something warmer and a change of clothes in case you get wet - especially for children)
- Appropriate footwear - gumboots recommended. NO sandals or crocs, covered shoes only.
- Water bottle
- You can bring binoculars if you have any
