The title of Alexandra Tylee’s new show, Don’t Hesitate, is drawn from the title of a poem by Mary Oliver that challenges those incomprehensible and overwhelming forces in our world with the power of the simple and the intimate.
Alexandra’s paintings perform this gesture via a careful devotion to the homely. Her paintings recall Nineteenth Century American folk art in their warm tones and elegant simplifications of nature’s forms, as well as their use of subtly ornamental antique wooden frames.
Fruit and flowers are her primary subjects, carefully arranged against spare, quiet backgrounds. They are the symbols, the representatives of the natural world in which Alexandra finds her principal inspirations and meaning-
“….the sparrow that nests in the veranda, the lady bug that landed on my arm, the last rose of Autumn…”
Exhibition is on show at Muse Art Gallery from 8 May - 6 June.
