Make your own aute earring with artist Aroha Matchitt-Millar. Decorate pre-beaten tapa with kōkōwai (earth pigments) and attach to a sterling silver earring hook to create your own taonga.
This gives you the chance to connect with the works by Aroha Matchitt-Millar in the exhibition Ahakoa He Iti. The work Taringa Aute refers to the carving motifs on pau, where some tīpuna have little lugs on their ears.
This represents the knowledge brought over from Hawaiki, connecting us to the Pacific through a long line of whakapapa passed down through adornment practices.

Participants are encouraged to attend the Curator’s Kōrero at 11am before the workshop, where Guest Curator Tryphena Cracknell will discuss the exhibition with Aroha joining the kōrero to share more about her own work.
Aroha Matchitt-Millar is a contemporary Māori artist whose practice explores whakapapa, mātauranga Māori, and ancestral narratives through jewellery, textiles, feathers, and taonga. Connected to Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāti Tarāwhai, and Ngāi Tūhoe, Aroha’s work honours the knowledge of her tīpuna while creating contemporary expressions of Māori identity and connection.
