Synchrony is dedicated to presenting a sensory experience that goes beyond just listening. Dana Parkhill (flute) and Fiona McCabe (piano) aim to connect with the audience through intimate, evocative performances in unusual settings.

For this Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival, the duo has created a project to celebrate the otherworldly and magical space of the Oceanarium at the National Aquarium. The programme and location have been chosen to stimulate the audience’s imagination and deliberately connect the music to the natural world.

Exploring the complementary timbres of the flute and piano, the music appears slow and sinuous, gliding or in fast, silvery flashes and spans classical masterpieces, contemporary works, and nature-inspired compositions. Music and environment combine to produce a unique, immersive experience.

Dana Parkhill:
Dana has played with professional and amateur orchestras for over three decades, both in NZ and London, mainly as a member of the flute section but also on several occasions as a soloist. Currently she contracts with Orchestra Wellington and the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. For the last 15 years Dana has also played/sung in Irish bands and more recently with her group, Ish, which performs traditional and contemporary folk music from around the world. This has also inspired her to start composing for the group.

Fiona McCabe:
As an award-winning pianist, Fiona has an established reputation as an accompanist, repetiteur, musical director, orchestral, vocal, and choral musician. Living for several years in Sydney, Australia and working with many acclaimed musicians worldwide, she brings a wealth of experience to her music making across numerous genres, performing early music to music theatre and everything in between. Just to keep things interesting, Fiona completed a Master in Counselling and Applied Psychotherapy in Sydney in 2014.
