William Nelson Park

300 St Aubyn Street West, Hastings, Hastings District, Hawkes Bay

Opened in 2013, William Nelson Park is a popular inner city park that includes plenty of grass and seating areas, a playground and a skate plaza.

It is a fantastic addition of green space and youth orientated facilities for Hastings Central City. The grassed areas and playground are perfect for relaxing and the playground will keep younger family members occupied with swings and a slide there to enjoy.

The skatepark has been designed to provide a challenge for skateboarders, in-line bladers and BMXers while remaining usable for skaters of all ages and skill levels. A number of safety initiatives have been included in the design of the park to ensure that the area is as safe as possible for residents, surrounding businesses and park users. A kiosk is located on site with a park supervisor, ensuring that users adhere to the rules of fair use of the park as well as park surveillance. These park guardians are at the park from midday till 9pm, seven days a week.

William Nelson Park shared the 2014 New Zealand Recreation Association Outstanding Project award which recognises excellence, innovation and effectiveness of a recreation project. Hastings District Council was also named as a finalist at the Local Government Awards for this project.
