Cityscapes - Jostling to Be Seen

16 Byron Street, Napier

Come and view Shelly Riddell’s paintings in the CAN foyer for the month of July.

This exhibition explores a range of NZ city’s iconic buildings jostling to be seen in a sea of diverse architecture, as a record before the 'next' big earthquake.

About the artist:
Shelley has always been passionate about art, but career wise tossed up between teaching and becoming an architect. Teaching won for 38 years. She delved into print making and weaving at Teachers Training College and did the odd drawing night class when they were on offer. Divorce and a stressful teaching job made her give painting a go, 10 years ago.

A fabulous year long night class with Helen Kerridge at Napier Boy’s High, and an interest and fascination with cubism tweaked her painting style and she began painting chairs; a great distraction while contemplating her future! But architecture slowly came back to the fore and Shelley now paints cityscapes, with paintings becoming more and more detailed as she discovers buildings that just can’t be left out.

Shelley works in a stunning studio on top of a hill near Puketapu with panoramic views from Sugar Loaf to the Kawekas to Te Mata Peak. The peace and great light influences her colour palette, but is in stark opposition to her busy canvasses. This year has presented many changes for Shelley.

She often returns to a quote stuck on her studio wall, although she can’t even remember where she read it; “Quit work to become a great artist, instead of an artist with potential”. So, Shelley has taken a year’s leave from teaching and thrown herself into painting… and is loving it! Although she finds being an artist has it’s own set of challenges and stresses, it’s what she wants to do; “so fingers crossed, I too may become a ‘great artist’ one day.”

Take a look around...
