Ten minutes’ drive south-west of Hastings will bring you to one of the surprises of Hawke's Bay.

From Napier CBD travel north along Marine Parade - which becomes Breakwater Rd - until you reach an intersection with Coote Rd.

Central Hawke's Bay District Council does not need to be advised of your intention to camp (freedom or self-contained) in the below locations, unless it is during a restricted period.

The Farndon Heritage Trail takes visitors through areas that have been historically associated with orchard and fruit growing industry in Hawke's Bay, as well as some sites of Māori significance.

The well-recited legend of Te Mata Peak portrays the hill as the prostrate body of the Waimārama chief, Te Mata.

This park was first created as the equivalent of the English village green in 1854, and Napier’s first cricket and football matches were played there. In 1886, the first steps were taken to transform this space into the wonderful garden we see today.  The square was enclosed with white picket fencing and gates stood at the corner entrances, trees and shrubs were planted around the boundary and seating was erected to face the large central band rotunda.

Cornwall Park is full of features to explore.

Named after British General Sir Henry Havelock, the town of Havelock North was founded in 1860 to provide land for small farmers and working-class settlers.  This followed the purchase of land in 1858 from Māori owners, of land previously known as ‘Karanema’s Reserve’.

The Hastings Urban Heritage Trail guides visitors through significant historical areas of Hastings.

Guided or self-catered; take a leisurely spin through a corner of New Zealand’s oldest wine region (it's the YELLOW section of the Hawke's Bay Trails map).

The Garden 2002 is an artwork thematically based on the biblical garden of Eden, a reference by sculptor Paul Dibble to New Zealand as an antipodean paradise.

There are a number of designated Council sites where overnight camping by Certified Self-Contained vehicles are permitted.

Renowned for its horticultural landscaping and formal gardens, visitors are invited to take a seat at the many benches dotted around the garden.

Lake Tūtira, and it's neighbouring Lake Waikopiro, is home to an abundance of wildlife and is a popular fishing spot. Alongside the lake is the 463 ha Tūtira Regional Park, maintained by the Hawke's Bay Regional Council, which has an erosion control, sustainable land management programme in place.

Hastings was named in 1873 by pastoral runholder and entrepreneur, Thomas Tanner, who had already settled in Central Hawke’s Bay a few years earlier.

An approximate 40minute drive southeast from Waipawa or Waipukurau through the Central Hawke's Bay countryside takes you past historic churches, picturesque woolsheds and stunning country landscapes to finally glimpse the south Pacific Ocean before descending down the hill to Blackhead beach.

Frimley Park was given to the people of Hastings by the Williams family in 1951, and was formerly the grounds for the family's homestead which burned down in 1950.

In 1854, John Chambers built a small cottage for his family on a block of land which he leased from Kurupo Te Moananui.

Hastings CBD's Waiaroha - Heretaunga Water Discovery Centre has opened a world of information about all things water.

The gardens are home to Keirunga Homestead and the Keirunga Gardens Arts & Crafts Society, who are settled within the maintained gardens and courtyard and provide community facilities for arts and crafts in the Hastings District.

Arriving in Hastings, the skyline to the west is dominated by the Kaweka Ranges with places of great beauty and historical interest.

Dust off your bike or dig out your walking shoes and set off on the iWay network of pathways, that stretches across the twin cities of Hastings and Napier.

On this calm Tuesday morning in Hawke's Bay, the region was rocked by a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that violently shook for three minutes.

This is a long trail (200km) that traverses a wide variety of scenery from the flat pastoral and viticulture land of the Heretaunga Plains to the mountainous high country foothills of the Ruahine and Wakarara ranges.

Located in the sprawling Cornwall Park, the Osmanthus Garden takes its name from the Osmanthus family of plants which have been extensively planted throughout, and includes highly scented shrubs and ground covers along with group plantings of pine trees and bamboo.

Opened in 2013, William Nelson Park is a popular inner city park that includes plenty of grass and seating areas, a playground and a skate plaza.

Tikokino Peonies are commercial Peony growers and open their gardens to the public for various events.

The Lions Community Playground at Windsor Park is 6,000 square metres of family fun.

The hills and the plateau to the southeast of Hastings are places of great beauty and historical interest.

This Trail runs through Central Hawke's Bay, equidistant from the Ruahine Ranges and the coast.

Farndon Park Domain is nestled along the Clive River between Hastings and Napier.

Te Awa o Mokotūāraro (formerly the Clive River) follows the original course of the lower section of the Ngaruroro River that flows for about 7km from Pakowhai Road Bridge northeast of Hastings, to join the mouth of the Ngaruroro River flowing into Hawke Bay.

The Tukituki River flows for 117 kilometres, east and then northeast, passing through the town of Waipukurau before flowing into Hawke Bay close to the city of Hastings.

Holt forest can be found near to Lake Tūtira (about 50 minutes drive time north of Napier) and it is an impressive aboretum with over 500 species of indigenous and introduced plants.  There are a number of trails including broad gravel paths suitable for wheelchairs.

When in Hastings take a stroll along the Deco walk starting at the Hastings Clock Tower.
