Blues Double Bill

Two of New Zealand’s blues guitar legends bring their bands to the Cabana for a night of barnstorming rhythm and blues. This is the first in a series of shows to celebrate the Cabana’s sixtieth anniversary.

Dusty Rhodes and the Bluesmobile began back in 1987 born from the seeds of two legendary Hawkes Bay bands, "Bluebeard" and "The Hoochie Coochie Blues Band". Members share a passion for blues and blues/rock music, and while the band has had some personal changes over the years the nucleus of Dusty Rhodes,Tim Walton and Justin Hannah has been constant for most of this time.

The band is centred on the guitar genius of Rhodes, who is also singer/songwriter. It has produced two recordings to date "Live at the Cabana 89" and "You Asked For It" in the mid nineties, also appearing on a recording for Creative Napier in 2008. At its peak the band toured extensively, gaining a following through its dynamic for its live performances and appearing at top venues and concerts throughout the country.

Bullfrog Rata

He may not have sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads, and his accent may be more Manawatu than Mississippi, but Bullfrog Rata is a bluesman heart and soul.

Starting out in the late eighties as a busker on the streets of towns throughout New Zealand because, as he recounts, “no-one wanted to play with me”. He is now one of New Zealand’s premier blues artist who has notched up an impressive list of support slot credits which include, among others, Tina Turner, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Charley Pride, Junior Wells and Canned Heat.

He has played for shoppers on the streets of Wairoa and for diplomats on the top floor of New Zealand House in London. He has played for gang members in Taumaranui and been helicoptered to private parties on Waiheke Island.

No matter what line up he appears in (the Midge Marsden duo or band, the Shayn Wills trio, The Legal Tender Band, his own band The Undergators or as a powerhouse solo performer), your cares and worries will disappear as the beat, the sound, the music, the movement, the voice, all conspire in one riveting package to take you to another place, somewhere with the wind at your face and the entire world at your feet

Take a look around...
