Tucked away in the foothills of iconic Te Mata Peak in Havelock North is the delightful Arataki Honey Visitor Centre – home to the honey bee and New Zealand’s largest beekeeping enterprise. At Arataki Honey you can’t help but enjoy learning about the honey bee, the honey they make and how important honey bees are to our valuable land-based industries and environment.

The fascinating world of the honey bee can be explored at your leisure in this modern and interactive facility.

  • Discover the honey bees world under microscopes
  • Smell the various scents of honey/wax/propolis
  • Feel the heat generated by the honeybees themselves
  • See the worker bees up close in the giant hive theatre
  • Taste our range of 8 different naïve & pastoral honeys

Try your hand at the puzzle table or dress up as a bee or beekeeper.

Our working bee wall is where you can watch the worker bees up close doing their bee dance after returning from their ventures into the wild, carrying loads of pollen to the right place in the hive for storage, or cleaning out cells to prepare for storing honey or in readiness for their Queen to lay eggs.

You will be able to watch Drone (male) and worker bees (female) hatching over the summer period. The bees are active all year around, so there is always action in the hive.

Our team is always in the centre to help out with spotting the Queen in a hive, explain the different stages in the life of a bee or answer that question about honey that you've always wanted to know

Whether you are young or older Arataki honey invites you to come and enjoy a truly sweet experience.

The Visitor Centre has a gorgeous honey and boutique gift store to browse through. Luscious cosmetics and body care items, health products and advice, delicious products for the foodies, toys and clothing for the children and something for everyone else.

Whether you are young or old Arataki Honey invites you to come enjoy a truly Sweet Experience!
