Opossum World
Opossum World in Napier is the only educational display that deals with the reality of the ecological nightmare that the opossum has become in New Zealand, a unique display.
Trace the history of the brushtail opossum, the introduction into New Zealand, the breeding cycle of this marsupial and the tools of the hunters past and present.
In New Zealand in the year 2000 it was estimated that we had seventy million opossums (20 to every New Zealander) and eating 21,000 tonnes of foliage each night (the equivalent of three rugby fields full of trees). This has become an ecological nightmare for New Zealand and the result of mans interference in the natural order of nature and animals.
Our retail showroom provides a wide choice of souvenirs such as luxurious fur rugs, natural fur cushions, slippers, scuffs, opossum fur inner-soles and mules lined with fur, classical jerseys and cardigans that have a blend of fine merino wool and silky feel of natural fur, hand crafted jerseys for the outdoors by local artists, socks, gloves, hats and scarves blended in merino wool and opossum fur, unique woven wraps and opossum fur scarfs. You design with fur and we will make it for you.
The unique combined shopping and educational experience.
