Napier, the Art Deco City, is world-famous for its jazz age architecture which rose from the rubble and ashes of a disastrous earthquake and subsequent fires which devastated the city in 1931.

Today, visitors from around the world delight in Napier's decorative and colourful buildings which speak of the optimism and confidence of the early 20th century and of a small kiwi town as it tackled the task of recreating itself during the Great Depression.

The Art Deco Trust offers guided walking tours of Napier's Art Deco Quarter, and a stylish retail shop.  These guided walks are held twice daily year-round, except on Christmas Day, and are held rain or shine. No bookings are necessary. All walkers receive an informative Art Deco Walk booklet. Complimentary refreshments and a video screening are available afterwards.

Tours depart from either The Art Deco Shop or the Napier i-SITE Visitor Information Centre. The Art Deco Shop is situated in Tennyson Street, Napier, Hawkes Bay and is just a two minute walk from Napier's famous Art Deco main street. The Napier i-SITE Visitor Information Centre is located on Napier's Marine Parade.

Events

On the third weekend of February, the Trust stages its annual Geon Art Deco Weekend, a not-too-serious celebration of the Art Deco style. The city gleams with classic cars and aircraft of the Deco era and people dressed in Deco style bring glamour and elegance to this unique festival which attracts people from many overseas countries.

A cooler mid-winter celebration is the Bluewater Hotel Deco Decanted and Jazz Festival. This is held each year in late July, providing another opportunity to live the classic lifestyle of the Art Deco era whilst enjoying quality jazz from some of New Zealand's best performers.
