As well as being a food and wine haven, Hawke's Bay is also home to a number of incredible coffee destinations. Whether you’re partial to a classic Kiwi flat white or an iced cold brew, these five cafes provide a place for any and every coffee lover to enjoy their daily fix.
Like the name suggests, Crazy Good serves some top notch coffee. Settled in the small port side suburb of Ahuriri, this cafe is relaxed and simple but also well-loved by locals and visitors alike. Crazy Good uses ‘Firsthand’ coffee which is roasted here in Hawke's Bay and also serves a selection of mouthwatering pastries from Yabon, a local french bakery. Grab your coffee and pastry takeaway style and enjoy a stroll along the waterfront with your morning cuppa.
Six Sisters Coffee House
Settled on Marine Parade in a historic 1890s villa is the Six Sisters Coffee House. The cafe building is part of a row of six neighbouring villas which all survived the 1931 earthquake and are known as the ‘Six Sisters’. The cafe itself uses ‘Bay Espresso’ coffee beans, roasted locally in Hawke's Bay. As well as their delicious coffee, they also have a selection of baked cabinet food and a small breakfast/lunch menu. There’s plenty of seating inside, as well as on the back porch or the front deck, which has a stunning view of the beach and is the ideal spot for a morning coffee in the sunshine.
F.G. Smith Eatery
Another favourite in stunning Ahuriri has got to be F.G. Smith Eatery also known locally as just ‘Smith’s’. Bright and welcoming from the moment you walk through the door, Smith’s is the ideal place for breakfast, lunch or just a coffee and treat from the cabinet. Smith’s uses ‘Allpress’ coffee beans which are roasted in Auckland, New Zealand and they serve consistently great coffee. As well as espresso coffee, they also serve some of the best cold brew in the Bay. It’s the perfect refreshing drink to enjoy alongside breakfast or lunch in the sunny courtyard.
This new kid on the block is exactly what Napier needed on their main shopping street. Opening at the beginning of 2018, Kolachi Eatery is the ideal place to stop for a good coffee after a morning of shopping or sightseeing around Napier City. Kolachi uses ‘Hawthorne’ coffee beans which are roasted locally in their Havelock North roastery. They make incredible espresso coffee which matches beautifully with their wide selection of cabinet food. Grab a seat outside and take in the sights and sounds of downtown Napier while your enjoy your coffee.
Georgia on Tennyson
Georgia on Tennyson, a specialty coffee house in Napier City is known for making unapologetically good coffee. As well as traditional espresso, the baristas here also use a variety of alternative brewing methods to create exceptional cups of coffee. Georgia generally uses ‘Flight’ coffee beans roasted in Wellington, New Zealand but also has a rotating selection of beans from other roasters, both from New Zealand and further abroad. While all of their coffee options are incredible, in the summer time I can’t go past either their cold drip coffee, or a long black over ice which makes a deliciously refreshing summer drink.
