Rugby World Cup 2011 will be held across New Zealand over a six-week period in September and October 2011. Twenty countries will participate in the 48-game tournament.
The tournament has an estimated television audience of more than four billion people and we expect at least 66,000 international visitors to come to New Zealand for the event. This is based largely on the Australian experience in 2003, which is a more appropriate comparison for New Zealand than France 2007. As with usual visitor flows, the majority will arrive and/or depart through Auckland; and approximately 70% of visitors will arrive only for the last two weeks of the tournament.
Hawke's Bay will host two matches:
Canada v France Sunday September 18th
Canada v Asia1 Tuesday September 28th
(Asia1 is the winner of the Asia group - this will not be known till mid 2010)
Held every four years, RWC is the third-biggest sporting event in the world. The 2011 Tournament will have an estimated television audience of more than four billion people, and we expect at least 60,000 international visitors to come to New Zealand.
We want to make sure all visitors leave our shores having enjoyed the best-ever Rugby World Cup.
