Regional Infrastructure

When it comes to infrastructure, business in Hawkes Bay has a sound base.

The Hawkes Bay region is located midway down the North Island of New Zealand on the East Coast, and is well served by a thriving international port at Napier accessing the Pacific Ocean.

The Port of Napier caters for exports and imports covering most corners of the world. International carriers servicing the port provide a range of services including containerised (refrigerated and general purpose), and bulk shipping.

The twin cities of Hastings and Napier feed in to a regional transportation network that links road, rail with air services and the Port of Napier. This transport system ensures Hawkes Bay has easy and efficient access to all domestic and international markets.

Hastings and Napier are conveniently linked by an expressway which begins south of Hastings and finishes by the airport, north of Napier. The two cities are only a short drive apart, and the scenic drive to Taupo takes less than two hours.

The region’s rail network links Hastings and Napier with Gisborne in the north, and the Palmerston North hub to Wellington in the south, and to the rest of the country.

Hawkes Bay’s Regional Airport, just north of Napier, is a busy domestic airport serviced by Air New Zealand. The airport has currently over 220 scheduled flights into the region each week.

Local, national and international freight and courier operations are also well established in Hawkes Bay.

The region has a well-developed network of cool storage and warehousing facilities servicing the region’s rurally based production sectors.

Hawkes Bay products can reach Auckland and most South Island markets within 24 hours by overnight transport. Nearly two thirds of New Zealand’s population live within a 450km radius of Napier and Hastings.
